  • Why Should I Convert From Oil to Gas?

Converting from an old oil-burning boiler system to a new, natural-gas powered one has a number of benefits to homeowners. In fact, most homeowners may not even know about several of these benefits, and don’t realize just how much they could gain from making this switch.

Here are a few of the most common reasons why people switch from oil burning boilers to gas-powered:

    • Natural gas is cheaper than oil
    • Natural gas boilers can be wall mounted
    • Natural gas boilers can be up to 96% efficient
    • Natural gas boilers operate nearly silently
    • Natural gas boilers are fed via a connection to public gas lines, which means they have a steady supply of fuel. No more scheduled deliveries or empty tanks!
    • High-Efficiency natural gas boilers don’t require a chimney; they can be directly vented outside
  • How Much Does it Cost to Convert to Natural Gas?
The average gas conversion for a boiler system costs anywhere between $7,000 and $10,000. This is a substantial investment in your home, but the truth is the benefits tremendously outweigh the costs, and you may even be able to have your new system pay for itself in savings over time. Gas furnaces are less expensive to replace, generally ranging from $3,500-$7,500 on average. Of course, your actual cost will vary based on your home and your existing equipment. • How Does The Oil-to-Gas Conversion Process Work?

As we stated earlier, switching over from an oil-fired system to a natural gas powered system has never been easier, but the installation has several steps. Here’s a brief breakdown of how the process works so you can anticipate how long it will take and what kind of work is going to be done on your home.

    What You Can Expect, Step-by-Step:

    • Step 1: If there is a gas line in the street within 100 feet of your home, we will request National Grid, the local gas supplier, run a gas line to the side of your house. We will verify if this gas line exists, and the line run to the side of your house is done at no charge.
    • Step 2: Your project will need paperwork completed, and we’ll help you with this. We’ll file a plumbing permit with your town or incorporated village. We’ll also file the necessary paperwork with the Nassau county department of health for your old oil tank, indicating if it’s being removed or abandoned.
    • Step 3: On our first day of work at your house, we prepare for conversion day. This includes installing a gas line over to where the new boiler will be placed and installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your house as required by safety codes. This usually takes about 4 hours, and doesn’t require shutting off your heating.
    • Step 4: On conversion day, your heat will be shut off from the time we start until the end of the day when thenew system installation is complete. In the morning, your local inspector checks the gas line we installed at our last visit, and National Grid installs a new gas meter in the afternoon.
    • Step 5: About a week after your installation is complete, your new system will need to be inspected by your local inspector. We’ll help you schedule this appointment on a day that works for you and your schedule.
    • Step 6: Once the conversion is complete and passes inspection, we will register your heating system with the manufacturer so you’re backed up by the maximum available warranties. We will also file for any applicable rebates with National Grid on your behalf.
  • Can You Convert Your Existing Oil Boiler to Gas Without Replacing It?
Maybe. There are gas burners which can mount on some existing boiler models, converting them from oil to gas-burning units. However, not everyone has one of these boiler models. The best way to find out is to let one of our experienced Long Island gas boiler experts examine your system and make the determination. We don’t recommend converting any boiler that’s more than 20 years old.
  • How Do I Know I’m Choosing the Right Contractor?
It’s extremely important to hire an experienced Long Island home services company to install your new gas boiler because they need to be there to support it once it’s up and running. The company you choose should stock repair parts on their service trucks for the specific model boiler they are installing at your house, and be capable of conducting any type of repair. They should also be able to answer any questions you may have about operation, maintenance, and care for your new system, and be available to answer any of these questions when you need them.
